Longoni: Milan still have €18m to use in centre-back pursuit

The January window will remain open for just over one week and AC Milan could make one or two signings in that period. Having failed to sign Medhi Taremi in the summer, the Rossoneri still have some money in the bank, a report claims.

Milan have already made it clear, through Stefano Pioli, that they want to sign another centre-back this month. Matteo Gabbia has been brought back, performing at a very high level, but depth is still missing in defence given the many injuries.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, the journalist Andrea Longoni discussed the January window and what could happen before the end of the month. He highlighted the fact that Milan still have €18m to spend from the summer, but that this money might not be used this month.

“Regarding the mercato. It will be interesting to see how it will end and, in particular, who will arrive in defence. Buongiorno was a mystery. A target, discussions with his agent, and the availability of the defender himself. However, the price is high and perhaps out of reach.

“It should be remembered that Taremi’s famous €18m has not been spent: initially designed for reinforcement in attack in January, then diverted to the centre-back role, this money is still available.

“It’s right to not sign someone just for the sake of it, though. Milan need a starter, which is why in the absence of a high-level profile, a loan could perhaps be the solution,” he writes.

Thanks to their comeback win against Udinese, the Rossoneri are now on four consecutive wins in the league. Some pressure has been put on Juventus, in other words, but Milan must first grab another win against Bologna next weekend.
