An American Airlines flight departing for Dallas Fort Worth shed engine debris during its departure from San Francisco on 9 May 2025.
American Airlines flight AA1175, operated by an Airbus A321-200, had conducted a departure from runway 01R San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The flight was a scheduled service to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

During the takeoff procedure, observers noted a puff of smoke emanating from the aircraft. Flight crew continued with the departure and scheduled service to Dallas.
A subsequent runway inspection revealed debris from one of the aircraft’s engines on the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident in a statement. “Aircraft on departure experienced a puff of smoke. Debris was recovered from the runway – a left-hand engine thrust reverse liner.”
The aircraft landed without further incident on runway 36L Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The landing was made approximately three hours after its initial departure from San Francisco.

Following takeoff, the flight had set course normally and climbed to flight level FL350 for the south-easterly service to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
Descent and approach procedures were similarly conducted normally in the aircraft landed without incident on runway 36L Dallas (DFW).

It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2016.
