How a Years-Old Unaddressed Fault Caused Chaos

On March 20, 2025, a catastrophic power outage struck Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. It grounded over 1,300 flights and stranding nearly 300,000 passengers.

The root cause was a fire at the nearby North Hyde 275kV substation, owned by National Grid. The incident exposed a critical, long-ignored fault in the UK’s aging power infrastructure.

A National Energy System Operator (NESO) report has now revealed that the problem stemmed from a fault which was detected seven years ago, but went unaddressed.

This incident not only disrupted global travel but also raised urgent questions about the resilience of critical energy systems.

The March 2025 Heathrow Blackout


The blackout began when a high-voltage bushing in one of the substation’s three supergrid transformers (SGT3) failed spectacularly.

According to the National Energy System Operator (NESO) report, commissioned by Ofgem, the failure stemmed from moisture that had seeped into the bushing. This caused a short circuit that ignited the transformer’s cooling oil.

The fire spread, damaging a second transformer and forcing the third to be shut down, knocking out the entire substation.

This left Heathrow Airport without power for nearly 24 hours. Ripple effects were felt across 71,000 homes and businesses, including Hillingdon Hospital.

An Unaddressed Problem


What makes this incident particularly alarming is that the fault wasn’t new. In July 2018, oil samples from the bushing showed elevated moisture levels, a clear warning sign. National Grid’s own guidelines recommended replacing the component, but the company took no action.

Worse, they deferred routine maintenance planned for 2022, allowing the issue to fester. The NESO report criticized National Grid’s asset management systems. It noted a lack of controls to ensure critical faults are addressed promptly.

This oversight turned a preventable issue into a full-blown crisis. Heathrow’s internal electrical setup didn’t help. The airport relied heavily on the North Hyde substation. The loss of this single supply point crippled critical systems like lighting, security, and baggage handling.

Restoring power required complex manual switching to draw electricity from two other substations, a process that took hours due to rigorous safety checks.

The airport didn’t fully reopen until late March 21, leaving passengers stranded and airlines scrambling to reroute flights across Europe and beyond.

The fallout was significant. Ofgem launched an investigation into National Grid for potential breaches of its operating license. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called the findings “deeply concerning,” urging stronger measures to protect the UK’s energy infrastructure.

National Grid responded by committing to overhaul its maintenance processes, including better oil sampling and fire risk assessments.

Meanwhile, Heathrow’s CEO, Thomas Woldbye, faced scrutiny for being unreachable during the crisis and for the airport’s over-reliance on a single substation.

This incident highlights broader issues with Britain’s aging power grid. The North Hyde substation, built in the 1960s, is part of a network increasingly strained by modern demands.

Experts warn that similar vulnerabilities exist across the UK’s critical infrastructure. The NESO report recommends urgent upgrades to substations, improved maintenance protocols, and better incident response plans to prevent future disruptions.

The Heathrow Airport blackout serves as a wake-up call. It underscores the need for robust investment in energy infrastructure and stricter oversight to ensure faults are addressed before they escalate.

While global travel and local communities recovered from the chaos, the focus must shift to building a more resilient grid to safeguard against such preventable disasters.
