When you design a PCB, the thickness of the core and prepreg layer is one of the most important aspects to consider. This is because the final board will need to support your circuitry without deforming or bending. Fortunately, you can select from several different PCB thickness options when making your design in KiCad, or other popular PCB software. The options are available on the specification tab of your design workspace and range from 0.2mm to 6.3mm in hundredths of millimeter increments.
Typically, a standard PCB is 0.062″ thick, but the actual thickness of your PCB can vary significantly depending on design considerations and production concerns. Thinner designs, for example, can reduce material costs and complexity in high-vibration applications. On the other hand, too thin a board may be more vulnerable to mechanical damage and make assembly and testing more difficult.
In a PCB, the substrate and laminate are usually made from non-conductive materials such as fiberglass or epoxy resin. These are typically called the’skeleton’ of a PCB because they are responsible for providing strength and rigidity to the structure. They also serve as the insulator between layers of copper. The copper layer can be in the form of foil or a full-on copper coating and can range from 0.0065″ to 1.37″ thick. This is because copper carries electrical signals between components, much like your nervous system carries messages between your brain and muscles.

How Thin Can a PCB Be Made?
The next layer of a PCB is the solder mask, which is deposited on top of the copper layer. Once the solder mask is in place, the rest of the layers of a PCB are applied and drilled through the holes that were created during the design phase. The final product emerges with resist properly covering the copper areas meant to remain in their final form and is examined by a technician for quality assurance.
The thickness of the copper layer is determined by how much current will be running through it, but can also depend on other factors such as thermal stability and connectors. Typically, a copper thickness of about 1.4 to 2.8 ounces is required, but it can be thinner or thicker depending on the specific needs of the project. It is important to communicate these specifications to your PCB fabricator when requesting a quote for the board, as it can affect the overall cost of the finished piece. A bare copper board is also available, and this can be a more affordable option for some projects.
