Back Drilling Process
Back drilling is the process of removing via stubs from the backside of a PCB, which reduces signal reflection and resonance issues caused by the stubs. It is a preferred fabrication technique for high-speed signals. Back drilling is a complex process that requires careful attention to detail to ensure it is executed correctly. There are several factors that can affect the effectiveness of back drilling, including board material and thickness, via size and spacing, and drilling method. To minimize these effects, a number of precautions must be taken during the back drilling process to ensure that all target vias and PTH components are successfully back drilled by the manufacturer.
There are many benefits of using the back drilling technique, such as ensuring that all vias and PTH components on your PCB are fully plated. The back drilling process can also improve the overall quality of your PCB by minimizing the occurrence of reflections, signal noise and crosstalk. In addition, the process can be used to create a smoother signal path for higher-speed circuits.
To use the Back drilling technique, you must first open the Layer Stack window and select a logical group of layers to back drill. Next, click the Drill Table button in the main menu to display the drill table. This table shows the current state of all vias, holes and pins on your board. You can then use the filter options at the top of the table to find specific nets that you want to back drill. You can also use the rules option to limit the scope of the back drill operation.

Precautions to Take During the Back Drilling Process
For example, you can set the rule scope to InNetClass(‘IO’) and IsVia to only back drill holes that are connected to IO pads. This will eliminate the possibility of back drilling holes that are not needed and save you time.
Another important step in the back drilling process is calculating the amount of residual stub length that you want to avoid. A stub length that is too short can cause signal loss, while a stub length that is too long can increase the manufacturing cost of your PCB. It is recommended that you use a stub length of 10 mils or less.
Once you have selected the proper stub length, you can start the back drilling process. To do this, you must locate the positioning holes that were used for the first back drilling. Then, back drill the electroplated holes that need to be back drilled and wash the back drilled holes to remove any residual drill chips.
Before drilling, you should always secure the workpiece. Then, make sure that you use a sturdy table and a suitable drill bit. In addition, you should wear safety glasses when operating the drill. You should also avoid wearing loose or dangling clothing, as it may get caught in the drill bit and cause injury. Lastly, you should never touch the drill bit with your hands or body as this can lead to burns.
