Samsung enthusiasts and tech aficionados are buzzing with anticipation as the Korean tech giant gears up to debut its latest flagship series, the Samsung Galaxy S24, on January 17. Among the trio of releases – Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the eagerly awaited Galaxy S24 Ultra – the spotlight is undeniably on the latter, and more specifically, its groundbreaking camera system.
Camera Hardware Evolution:
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera system marks a significant departure from its predecessor by opting for a more advanced and high-resolution 50MP 5X periscope telephoto, ditching the previous 10MP 10X periscope telephoto. The primary camera boasts a staggering 200MP sensor, now equipped with the slightly upgraded ISOCELL HP2SX sensor. Supporting this, the 12MP ultra-wide-angle and 10MP 3X telephoto lenses have received refinements, resulting in a diverse optical range from 0.6x ultra-wide-angle to 10x telescope range.
The camera system promises faster switching ranges in both Auto and Pro camera modes with a comprehensive range of options: “0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x.” Samsung’s marketing touts the optical telephoto as “Quad Telephoto,” covering 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x, with 2x and 10x delivering hi-res optical-quality zoom, and 3x and 5x providing actual optical zoom range.
Samsung will also debut the Nightography Zoom feature for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, inviting users to illuminate their nights with this groundbreaking addition. According to Samsung, “Brighten up your night with Nightography on Galaxy S24 Ultra.” This innovative capability empowers users to not only capture the essence of low-light moments but also invites them to explore a closer look. With the Galaxy S24 Ultra, zooming in from a distance even in challenging low-light conditions becomes effortlessly achievable, marking a significant leap forward in smartphone photography.
Video Recording Prowess:
Fueled by the strongest Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chipset, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera system offers unparalleled video recording capabilities. Users can seamlessly switch between all camera sensors, including the front camera, while recording 4K 60fps videos, opening up creative possibilities in videography. Notably, the device can capture 50MP hi-res 8K videos and photos in both 1x and 5x optical zoom modes.
In a bid to revolutionize video recording, Samsung introduced the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec. This codec supports 10 to 12-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 subsampling, providing a professional-grade format for post-processing akin to the ProRES format on the iPhone.
Innovative Technologies:
Samsung showcases two innovative technologies – ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace and E2E AI Remosaic – designed specifically for the 200MP sensor. The Zoom Anyplace, powered by Qualcomm AI Engine, allows automatic subject tracking and cropping, along with up to 4x zoom in any direction via the 200MP sensor while retaining 4K complete footage. The E2E AI Remosaic technology, boasting twice the speed of its predecessor, ensures refined image quality.
AI Multi-frame Processing:
The Galaxy S24 Ultra introduces an enhanced AI-powered feature – “Multi-frame Processing for All Zoom ranges.” Activated automatically beyond the 20x zoom mark, this feature employs deep learning to provide super-resolution across all focal lengths, showcasing Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of zoom photography.
