Following some delays during the delivery process Wizz Air has today taken delivery of their first of 47 Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The airline is the first in the world to take delivery of a plane of this type powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and also becomes the first European low-cost carrier to operate the type.
First A321 XLR for Wizz Air UK
Wizz Air has officially received its first Airbus A321XLR, becoming the inaugural operator of the ultra-long-range aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines. This delivery marks a significant milestone for both the airline and Airbus, as it introduces a new era of long-haul, low-cost travel.
The A321XLR, registered as G-XLRA, is equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G engines, known for their fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This aircraft offers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and can accommodate 239 passengers in a single-class configuration. Its extended range allows airlines to operate longer routes without the need for larger, wide-body aircraft, thereby reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
New Market Opportunities
Wizz Air had plans to deploy the A321XLR on new routes, including long-haul flights from its bases in London Gatwick to Jeddah and from Milan to Abu Dhabi, starting in March 2025, however delays in the delivery process has delayed these until later dates.
These routes, lasting up to eight hours, will enable the airline to offer direct access to distant destinations at significantly lower fares, connecting more cultures, people, and economies.
The introduction of the A321XLR aligns with Wizz Air’s strategy to expand its network and offer affordable long-haul travel options. By leveraging the aircraft’s capabilities, Wizz Air aims to revolutionize the travel experience for passengers, providing more choices and flexibility.
The A321XLR’s environmental credentials are noteworthy. Wizz Air estimates that the aircraft’s carbon intensity will be at least 30% less than that of other carriers operating on similar routes. This commitment to sustainability underscores the airline’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint while expanding its operations.
